Don't throw away brown sugar that's hardened. Put a slice of bread in the container. In a few hours, it will be soft again.

A quick zap in the microwave will do the same thing 10 to 15 seconds.
My brown sugar never goes hard. Why?? Because I store it in a glass jar with a tight lid. Even if the jar is almost empty, as long as the lid is on tight, the brown sugar stays soft.
