January 1, 2010, Newsletter Issue #446: Count Out Your Serving Sizes

Tip of the Week

My daughter and I have really begun to take our time and count out our portion sizes. It is very easy to overeat if you don't know what your portion size is. All you really have to do is read the label on the box of food. For exzmple, we had some Goldfish crackers with lunch today. One serving size equals 51 Goldfish. I scoop out what I think is 51 Goldfish and then let my daughter count out the correct amount. My pile was much bigger. It just went to remind me that I shouldn't be guessing portion sizes until I have been correctly using them for some time.  If your food comes in a package you will be able to see what the serving size it. In general 4 oz. of meat is a serving size. Half a banana and a fistful of grapes is a serving size. 1/2 a cup of any vegetable or fruit can be considered a serving size.

Remember folks, sticking to your serving sizes is not about losing weight. It is about staying healthy.
