Did you know that sugar toughens cranberry skins if added before they soften? Keep this in mind if you're planning to make a sugar-sweetened cooked cranberry sauce this year: Cook cranberries in the liquid called for in your recipe until they pop (which usually happens in about 5 minutes.) Add the sugar last and stir until it dissolves.
